Invasive species Control Solutions

There are many plants which are known to be invasive and need a management programme, these include Invasive Native and Non-Native Species. We identify and professionally control or remove those species that most commonly cause issues to homeowners, local authorities, construction companies and commercial businesses.

Our qualified teams of surveyors and field operatives, together with our in-house specialist advisory services ensure people and businesses can enjoy a healthy environment to live and work in. We think laterally and economically, with an alternative method approach that limits the use of chemical treatments where necessary and always liaising with Environment Agency officials when required.

We use several forms of control for invasive plants, depending on the species we may use one or more of the following:

  • Herbicide treatment
  • Manual methods
  • Excavation and removal
  • Biological methods

Helping homeowners

There are many species such as Horsetail, Variegated yellow archangel, Virginia creeper, to name just a few, that you may have in your garden but have taken over the land, suffocating other plants. Some species can encroach onto neighbouring properties causing even more issues. We can reduce, control, or eradicate these for you so your garden or land can remain an ecological haven.

Helping construction & commercial

Finding an infestation of invasive weeds on land planned for development will be a concern for many construction companies or commercial estates, needing a solution that is not only fast, but cost effective. Local authorities, housing associations and property management companies also have obligations to ensure land is weed free, either for amenity use or common space use.

We can survey, treat and remove (via excavation) the problem for you. Our field operatives and technicians are fully qualified and highly experienced in a range of excavation methods, several of which may be used to provide the best results for the site.

Invasive species control Services

Environment Controls can control most invasive weeds in in a number of ways, including chemical, manual and mechanical. Each species has an optimum control method, we can advise which would be best after carrying out a survey, and based on the planned land use. There are three primary options:

Herbicide control

We have a range of treatment options and techniques that are designed to control and kill the invasive plant, including controlled spraying, leaf wiping and stem injection. The method of application varies depending on the species and level of growth, but we can conduct a survey and advise you on the best course of action and provide you with a treatment plan.

Manual control

Certain species such as Himalayan balsam are successfully controlled by using the hand-pulling method (as seen right). Often infestations can be so severe that equipment either cannot reach the target area, or a manual method is simply the better option for the environment or ecosystem it has taken over.

Excavation & removal

Excavation results in the eradication of the infestation and this is achieved by careful removal of the above ground and below ground elements of the plant. It’s vital to extract all fragments of plant from root to tip as any material left in the soils will allow regrowth.

Some species can grow very deeply into the ground, and can spread out quite far. With a survey, we will be able to precisely determine the spread and ensure tidy and targeted removal.

Removal of noxious plant materials and soils from excavation is required to be carried out by a company holding a specific waste carrier’s license, such as Environment Controls. All waste needs to be taken to a landfill site licensed to accept noxious waste. By doing this we comply to all current government legislation.

When does an invasive species become an issue?

Whether you’re a homeowner or you manage residential or commercial property, discovering an infestation of invasive weeds will be a major concern for you, especially if, like Ragwort or Horsetail they are harmful to humans and livestock. Such infestations can cause a decrease in valuation when selling a property or land.

Noxious weeds such as Giant hogweed and Hemlock are extremely toxic causing skin conditions if touched and have been known to be fatal if ingested.

Some invasive plants are listed under Schedule 9, Part II of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 which means it is illegal to plant them in the wild.

The Weed Act 1959 gives the government (through the local authority) the power to require (in writing) a land occupier to take the action required to prevent the spread of injurious weeds. If a notice is served and the occupier unreasonably fails to comply with it, they are guilty of an offence, and following prosecution, may be fined.
