  Who are Gwynedd County Council?

Gwynedd County Council is the governing body for the principal area of Gwynedd, one of the subdivisions of wales. As a council, this makes them responsible for a range of civil functions and vital services for people and businesses. Among them are well known functions such as social care, schools, housing and waste collection. But many councils are responsible for much more – including business support, pest control and maintenance of council owned land and adopted roadways.

Gwynedd’s problem with urban and highway weeds

Gwynedd county council are responsible for the management of various highways and the maintenance of its urban areas. Weeds are a pervasive problem that comes up every year. Weeds are capable of damaging highways and footpaths by creating cracks in the tarmac or uneven ground as they grow. Weeds can also block off access to amenity spaces and there are many toxic species that can pose a problem to people and animals. This is why it is important for councils to have a management strategy in place that provides treatment and control for all the areas of responsibility.

  What solution was implemented?

Gwynedd County Council carried out a tender process that resulted in the selection and engagement of Environmental Controls (EC) to carry out urban weed control to the urban highway network, the NWRTA network and the Urban pernicious weeds throughout the county. EC has a wide array of equipment including quad bikes that are fitted with vale engineering kerbside sprayers that utilise low-drift nozzles. Specialist equipment like this means that the council doesn’t need to invest in any such machinery.

EC has a wealth of accreditations and experience in the weed management space which means that Gwynedd Council has access to trained experts with no delay, ensuring that the weed management can be addressed without delay.

 The outcome

Gwynedd county council now have a robust weed management plan in place for all their target areas, this means that the weeds will be constantly controlled, preventing growth from damaging infrastructure, blocking off amenity spaces or posing risks to people and animals. By engaging with Environment Controls, the council does not need to undertake any of the administration of weed management technicians, the acquisition and maintenance of specialist equipment, or the purchase, storage and handling of herbicides which is all left in the hands of experts.
