get rid of Horsetail

Horsetail – which is sometimes erroneously referred to as Mares tail – is a very resilient weed that is also toxic to equines if ingested.

It is common to see hard standing such as block-paving, tarmacadam roads and pavements damaged by Horsetail growth as its rhizomes will exploit gaps to grow through. It is therefore important for developers and construction companies to identify and remove Horsetail to prevent the plants from re-appearing through newly laid driveways and footpaths.

Environment Control offer the following specialist services to treat and remove Horsetail infestations:

  • Herbicide treatment
  • Complete excavation
  • Cultural control measures

Environment Controls is a trading name of Japanese Knotweed Ltd. We have been building relationships with customers since 2010 and have over 1,000 independent five star reviews on TrustPilot. Our H&S trained and accredited team members will resolve your Giant hogweed infestation.

Horsetail Removal Services

Environment Controls can control Horsetail growth in a number of ways, but the two primary options are:

Herbicide control

We have a range of treatment options and techniques that are designed to control and kill Horsetail growth and permeate deep into the roots. The method of application varies depending on the species and level of growth, but we can conduct a survey and advise you on the best course of action and provide you with a treatment plan.

Excavation & Removal

Excavation results in the eradication of the immediate infestation and this is achieved by careful excavation of the above and below ground elements of the plant. We provide a survey and comprehensive report before hand to ensure precise and targeted excavation of the affected ground. And finally, all plant waste material and contaminated soils will be safely removed.

Why is Field Horsetail a problem?

Horsetail is an invasive native herbaceous perennial plant. What does that mean? It means that Horsetail has no wooden above-ground stem and rather than just living for one year and dying off, it regrows every year.

Horsetail is easily recognised by its upright light green ‘fir tree’-like shoots that are pointed green shoots with folded needle-like leaves pointing upwards. These shoots are rough to the touch as they have a natural hard casing.

In spring, the plant first appears as light brown stems with fertile spore-producing cone structures at the end of the stems. A single cone can produce 100,000 spores. As a perennial, the above ground growth dies off in the winter and it will resurface in the summer.

Cultural Approach

At Environment Controls, we believe in an integrated approach to weed management. As such, we will always explore environmentally friendly control practices that often work hand-in-hand with our treatment and removal options. There are some simple cultural methods that can be applied to help limit the spread of Horsetail and in time, eradicate future growth.

When we conduct our survey, any alternative solutions that may support control and eradication of the Horsetail infestation will be highlighted in our comprehensive survey report.

If you have any questions, or would like to know more about our approach to integrated weed management, please do not hesitate to contact us!.
