How to Kill Bamboo

What stops bamboo from growing?

When it comes to finding out how to stop bamboo from growing – there are really only 2 main effective options:

Dig it out

Excavation is the most effective way to eradicate bamboo, but it should be carried out by a qualified contractor to avoid regrowth from any fragments left behind. It’s important that all parts of the plant both above and below ground are removed from site.

Use herbicide

Herbicides are a cost effective method to kill the bamboo, but it may require multiple applications over several years. Herbicide can be applied via spray or stem injection depending on the size of the bamboo stems and the season.

How do I stop a neighbour’s bamboo from growing in my garden?

Plant a barrier

If you have tried speaking to your neighbour about your concerns and there is no resolution you have no option but to protect your property from bamboo encroaching onto it.

A plant barrier is best and can be used in two ways. If bamboo is on land adjacent to yours and you’re concerned it may encroach, then a specialist root barrier can be installed to block any bamboo roots from growing from or into neighbouring land or property.

The other way a root barrier can be used barrier is to contain your bamboo. A trench is dug all the way around the bamboo stand (to at least 50-60 cm) then, after removing all the bits of rhizome the barrier can be installed. This will prevent any neighbouring disputes from your bamboo going where it’s not wanted!

What happens when bamboo dies?

Bamboo can be effectively killed off by herbicide application but it has remarkable regenerative capabilities so any remaining fragments left behind can grow into new plants.
