PROJECT EXAMPLE: BAMBOO EXCAVATION AND ROOT BARRIER
Invasive Bamboo removal from a residential property by excavation and installation of a root barrier to stop further spread from rhizomes that could not be removed from a boundary wall.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Environment Controls (part of Japanese Knotweed Ltd) was asked to remove a sizable clump of Bamboo from a residential property.
Bamboo was running throughout the shrub border, so our first task was to cut down and remove all shrubs to allow easier access.
Our plan was to chase out the Bamboo to the edge of the drive and install a root barrier to prevent any runners from within the drive returning, as the client did not want the driveway to be dug up.
The barrier was installed at the edge of the bed, running up the back of the wall and edge of the block paving, to seal in (and separate) any remaining Bamboo from the clean topsoil that was to be put back into the bed.
CONTRACT DELIVERY
After completing a site survey excavation was the recommended and agreed method of removal and it was to include chasing out any spread into neighbour’s property within the front garden border that spanned across both properties. The front soft landscaped bed (15m2) was infested with invasive Bamboo. Our proposal was to excavate the soils from the bed to a depth of 500mm (from current ground levels only) and remove from site.
Rather than dismantling the wall, Bamboo growth was cut from the joins, and the stem/rhizome material in the wall was treated with herbicide with further treatments planned in for the next couple of years which should the stop recurring growth. The root barrier was installed to stop ingress back into the bed.
THE OUTCOME
We successfully removed all vegetation, excavating 19.5m2 of soft landscape bed to 500mm depth and installed root barriers, which were then covered with the replaced topsoils. Providing a two-year monitoring and herbicide treatment programme would stop any remaining bamboo growing in walls and hard standing. We removed two skips of vegetative material to landfill.
“Mike and Kieran were exemplary in their task of ridding us of the awful bamboo infestation. They explained everything about the work they do and how they do it which was much appreciated. Thank you all for the professional and prompt way you have dealt with our problem; Dan, Maggie, Mike and Kieran.”
