Warning: Why cutting bamboo canes can make the problem worse
With invasive and unwanted bamboo getting out of control in UK gardens, the common first instinct is to simply cut down all the bamboo canes. However, this action alone will not kill the plant and can often stimulate more aggressive growth.
The plant’s energy is stored in its underground rhizomes. When you cut the canes, the rhizome system responds by using that stored energy to send up numerous new shoots in a desperate attempt to survive.
Eradicating an established bamboo grove is not a weekend project. To succeed, the rhizomes must be completely removed due to their vast energy reserves.
