what is vegetation clearance?

Vegetation clearance is the deliberate removal or controlled reduction of unwanted or invasive plants, shrubs and invasive trees. Ideal for land preparation for change of land use, or simply to ensure land remains viable and fit for purpose. Overgrown vegetation is often required to provide access for other works including invasive plant treatments or excavation.

Whether you’re managing woodlands, commercial properties, or agricultural land, our methods and approach guarantees minimal disruption to the environment including  considerations of nesting birds and other wildlife.

What are vegetation management services?

Our professional services are carried out by qualified teams, under safe practice regulations.

Services include:

  • Comprehensive land clearing : Removing unwanted plant or shrub growth, dead plant material, and dense vegetation.
  • Invasive species and shrub control: Safe removal of invasive plants such as Himalayan balsam, Rhododendron, Variegated archangel and three-cornered leek.
  • Mulching: A sustainable solution for dealing with the removed vegetation is to mulch it for repurposing on-site as natural ground cover, where suitable.
  • Brush cutting: Certain invasive plants, such as Japanese knotweed can be cur down in the winter months enabling better control in the spring.
  • Flailing: The Robo Flail – a remotely operated machine – is particularly effective for managing woody plants such as Rhododendron as its powerful flail system can cut through its thick stems and mulch debris on-site. It is also useful for challenging terrains.
  • Ditch clearance: Winter clearance ensures water flows freely through drainage systems, preventing flooding and soil erosion.

WHY IS Winter shrub control important for land owners and managers?

Invasive woody shrubs are best removed in winter. Here’s how we manage the most common culprits:

  • Rhododendron ponticum: Winter (November–March) is ideal for cutting back or excavating this invasive plant, as reduced vegetation improves accessibility.
  • Bamboo: Winter dieback allows for easier excavation or herbicide injection into bamboo stumps, whether in residential beds or wild woodland growth.
  • Cotoneaster: Bright winter berries make this shrub easier to identify and remove, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Buddleia (Buddleja): With shallow roots and dormant foliage, Buddleia is simpler to control and remove during winter.

PROJECT EXAMPLE: PEATLANDS SHRUB CLEARANCE FOR NATURAL ENGLAND

In this case study, we look at how clearing silver birch from peat bunding located on Doncaster New Humberhead Peatlands controlled potential risk of fire spreading to underground Peat areas. (Picture shows the end result).

We devised a 4 step plan to complete the project:

  • Cut Silver Birch to ground level.
  • Larger birch to be cut into smaller sections.
  • Throw arisings into the wet bund areas.
  • Paint neat Glyphosate including dye onto each stump face.
